5 Essential Qualities Every Entrepreneur Must Have
By definition of artisanship, I am a musician…. Years ago, I had a dream: combining funky baselines, “phat” beats, and “dope” lyrics (pardon my slang) to make great music with my friends. As I look back on those times, I’ve learned a few hard lessons over the years about what it takes to be an aspiring entrepreneur – minus the business plan. These are some of the qualities I believe every entrepreneur must have to succeed.
Curiosity. Before all the plans, the start-up money or even the idea to begin to decide to start a business….is a question that spurs serious thought in the minds of every successful entrepreneur: What is missing? Dating back to the earliest times in human history, our entrepreneurial ancestors have been asking and answering this question with overwhelming results! Simply put, our curiosity allows us to ascertain and understand what we can provide to the marketplace.
Vision. Hopefully it goes without saying that every question deserves an answer, which leads me to this all-important quality. Back to our ancestors – once the question was answered, what should be done? Action takes shape in the form of an idea, and that idea spawns further action. Entrepreneurs with good vision have a strong sense of direction or way ahead, which leads to incredible opportunities.
Ingenuity. This quality is essential for entrepreneurs at all levels. Ingenuity comes in many forms – imagination, resourcefulness, inventiveness, cleverness. You think I’m using synonyms for the word? I am! From the architect that designs a skyscraper from the visions of a customer to the auto mechanic that can determine the malfunctioning component in an engine by sound alone, ingenuity translates a good idea into physical form. The manager that seeks out the mechanic or the architect is no exception.
Determination. With the same voracious attitude that mathematicians, scientists, and physicists utilize to answer the unknown questions our universe holds, successful entrepreneurship requires the same level of determination. While I won’t bore you with the details for this quality, what I can say is that those mathematicians, scientists, and physicists don’t have all the answers yet.
Focus. This is the quality separating the foolish from the wise and the dreamers from the planners, so to speak. Ever heard the saying “Motivation gets you started but Commitment sees you through?” Every successful entrepreneur that I’ve met focused on Focus. Staying on target though goal-setting, adaptation, and feedback loops is a necessity for successful entrepreneurs. With true focus comes resiliency – the bounce back needed to survive hardships.
You might be asking yourself, “What qualifies a musician to discuss entrepreneurial qualities?” Honestly, I’m not too sure myself. Even though I’m a bit older – though maybe not wiser – than I was back then, recalling those times keeps me aware of where I stand and where I’m headed. Business is an adventure – it’s always good to have a compass!
